GROW — Goal, Reality, Options, Will

What the method is for

Helping the coachee find their own solutions

Guiding a person toward their own solutions by following a structured sequence of questions: clarifying the goal, exploring the reality, generating options, and committing to an action.

Why it exists. Most managers hand out solutions. A GROW coach helps the person find their own — which builds far more durable commitment.

Core principle

A progressive questioning model

GROW is a progressive questioning model. You don't give answers — you ask the questions that let the person find their own.

Step-by-step breakdown

The 4 steps of the method

Examples by seniority level

From team questioning to preparing a freelance transition

Mid-level consultant — Tech Lead coaching a senior developer hesitant to take on more responsibility

GOAL: "What would you like to achieve over the next 6 months?" → "I want to be recognised as a go-to architecture expert."

REALITY: "Today, what makes you stand out as an architect in the team's eyes?" → "Other people come to me on technical questions, but I'm never invited to the official architecture decisions."

OPTIONS: "What could you do to change that? What haven't you tried yet?" → "I could propose structuring ADRs (Architecture Decision Records) on our projects... or run a monthly technical session..."

WILL: "What will you commit to doing by next week?" → "I'll put together an ADR format and send it to the CTO for approval."

Senior consultant — Manager coaching a senior consultant preparing a move to freelance

GOAL: "If you could describe your ideal situation in 12 months, what would it look like?"

REALITY: "What's stopping you from making that leap today?"

OPTIONS: "What are the 3 things you could do to reduce that risk?"

WILL: "Which of those 3 options will you commit to testing in the next 30 days?"

Freelance variant

Freelance variant

GROW is especially valued for freelancers positioning themselves as a coach or development consultant. It's the method that sets apart the consultant who hands out answers from the one who builds their clients' autonomy.

Key takeaways

GROW in one sentence

GROW = coaching through questions. Goal (objective) + Reality (current situation) + Options (possibilities) + Will (concrete commitment). You don't give the answer — you help the person find it.
